A new poll conducted by Tavern Research found that Congressman Michael Baumgartner leads Democratic challengers in Washington’s 5th Congressional District, but trails Independent candidate and firefighter Nate Powell in a general election matchup.
In a head-to-head race between Baumgartner and Powell, voters support Powell 53% to 47%. By contrast, Baumgartner maintains an advantage over Democratic candidates tested in the poll.
“These results show that voters are looking beyond party labels and that Nate is the candidate who can win this seat and deliver for working families in Eastern Washington,” said Adam Sherrill, Campaign Manager.
The survey was conducted by Tavern Research between May 18 and May 25, 2026. The poll sampled 578 likely voters in Washington’s 5th Congressional District and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points.
